Weather and pollution

We have recently linked weather and pollution data to the SLS, opening a new range of possibilities for researchers. Further information can be found here.

Weather data is available as monthly averages from January 1981 onwards. The data pertains to 5×5 km grids, with monthly data available for each grid. Variables available include:

  • temperature
  • frost
  • sunshine
  • precipitation
  • cloud cover

Pollution concentration data is available at 1×1 km grid square level for the whole of Scotland. The following variables are available:

  • carbon monoxide (2001-2008)
  • nitrogen oxide (1994-2008)
  • ozone (1994-2005)
  • particulate matter < 10 microns (1994-2008)
  • particulate matter < 2.5 microns (2002-2008)
  • sulphur dioxide (1994-2008)

The weather and pollution data are freely available to download from their sources.  To download or get technical information visit the Met Office (weather data), or DEFRA (pollution data).
